Install ASUS AC56R Wi-Fi dongle driver on Linux

Posted on Updated on

The asus ac56r use rtl8812-au wifi chip. There does not have any official driver provided by ASUS. :(

I’m using ubuntu 16.04.4 with kernel version 4.15.0-34-generic. The old method, “apt install rtl8812au-dkms” is not working with the new kernel. The driver provided from the apt repo is outdated.

We need to compile the driver manually with the most updated version.

sudo apt install libelf-dev linux-headers-generic #you may need these package

#Install the driver
git clone https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8812au
sudo dkms build 8812au/4.2.2
sudo dkms install 8812au/4.2.2
sudo modprobe 8812au
